Catfiddle Street Chronicles

Cities and Streets last a long time…
so its worth taking trouble when we build them.

Catfiddle Street is a new street made out of antique bricks with an intertwining jumble of houses being built in Charleston, South Carolina. I believe that every city and town should have a street with intertwining houses, or several of them. And streets with intertwined jumbles of houses shouldn’t all look the same. Like how all storybook castles, children’s tree forts, or tiny Palladian villas are unique, these kinds of places really only have one thing in common, which is that they are the fulfillment of someone’s dream.
Also they’re usually good places to live, and to ponder more good dreams.

The construction methods at Catfiddle Street are tried and true. Old ways of doing things so often seem to be inherently healthy—working slowly, tempered by the sweat of the brow, building things personally, the way that townspeople used to build towns back in the old days. Every town needs human touch, personality, magic, and the kind of spirited hard work that lets those good ingredients succeed in surprising a whole lot of people…including the doers themselves!

Something like Catfiddle Street can’t just happen. You need to have a unique and talented group of people, which doesn’t come together all too often. I’ve been lucky to meet many such exceptional people, and a whole lot of progress has been made here recently.

Still there’s always more work to do. Always more dreams to work on.

Bill Musser is an antiques and oddities dealer who supplied a lot of stuff for Catfiddle Street. Here is a pic of Ol Billy Musser in the original 4000 year old marble quarries 200 miles west of Beijing. You never know where in the world Bill might be. Could be Turkey. Egypt. China. India.

Bill once said: “Life is difficult. If it were easy— everyone would still be alive.”

About his collection of antiques Bill said, “Its all just shit to me.”

A life in sweaty clothes covered in dust and paint seemed a whole lot more interesting than Gucci shopping
